ABOUT
This project aims to address the lack of comprehensive data and understanding of the causes of and attitudes towards Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The research objectives include conducting a rigorous quantitative and qualitative study on GBV in the UAE using a new survey at Zayed University (ZU), creating community impact through workshops and webinars with international organizations and UAE entities, and disseminating the findings through effective communication channels. To analyze the extent, drivers, and individual and community experiences and perceptions of GBV, the research project utilizes the ZU survey as its primary data source. Additionally, preliminary data from Ewaa, a platform in the UAE focusing on social welfare issues including domestic violence and GBV, can serve as an alternative data source. The expected outcomes include estimating GBV experiences and attitudes in the UAE, identifying drivers, and outlining research priorities and context-specific policy solutions. The project's website will showcase infographics and visualizations, effectively communicating results and policy implications. It is important to acknowledge the limitations of this research, as data collected from the ZU community will not be representative of the UAE as a whole. However, the study aims to contribute valuable insights to combat GBV in the UAE and promote evidence-based policies for prevention and intervention. By focusing on the specific context of the UAE and utilizing the ZU survey, this research strives to provide targeted and locally relevant recommendations to address the issue of GBV.
